Archaeologists have announced the discovery of an ancient city in the northern Barranca region of Peru.
The 3,500-year-old city of Panguico is believed to have served as a major trading post connecting the Andes and Amazon basins with early societies on the Pacific coast.
The ancient city is located more than 120 miles from Lima and is about 2,000 feet above sea level.
The city is believed to have been founded around 1800 to 1500 BC, around the same time as early civilizations in the Middle East and Asia.
The discovery provides clues to what happened to the Caral people, the oldest known civilization in the Americas, researchers say.
