Thai banks tighten restrictions on Myanmar nationals’ bank accounts

Some Thai private banks have been cracking down on Myanmar nationals by closing Thai bank accounts and limiting the amount of money they can transfer.

Myanmar national bank accounts that have not been closed are being controlled, even blocking foreign transfers if money sent from abroad does not arrive in the account.

In addition, those who have had their bank accounts closed are facing difficulties because the bank has not released the money that is stuck, according to people who have experienced it.

In order to reopen the account, they have to go to the Thai police station in the relevant township, which means they are afraid of unnecessary checks.

Thai banks target and close bank accounts with large amounts of money and frequent monthly withdrawals, as well as accounts where the registered Thai SIM card (phone number) and the phone number used to open the bank account are different.
